For the first time ever, I was totally surprised on my birthday. Technically, it was about five hours before my birthday. But, still.

I was to meet my friend Chad at the Maui airport, around 6pm. We would then go hook up with Candice and Scott, at the hotel. My puddlejumper from Moloka’i was late (over an hour and no one cared) and Chad’s flight from Seattle was late (there was a fight between two women onboard, one clawing the other across the face).

I, of course, had no way of knowing any of this because, as mentioned, I had no cell service whatsoever. It was totally great.

Anyway, I was just picking up the rental when Chad called. I put the car in park when I pulled up to baggage, to hop out and hug my dear friend. As he walked up, I turned for a minute and, all of a sudden, Marcus was in my face. Surprise!

No one looks out for me like Marcus. He was originally part of the plan but then couldn’t make it because of business. I was really bummed, I really wanted him here. He’s supposed to be in Europe, with Band of Horses. But, unbeknownst to me, plans changed on Wednesday.

It is safe to say I squealed like a little girl. In fact, I’m sure we were making quite a scene. especially when, from behind Marcus, Lajeunesse popped into view. Jason apparently decided today, at noon, to come to Maui. What the fuck?! I’m looking forward to Chad being here, and now I have Chad, Marcus, and the Juice here to celebrate my birthday weekend?!?!

Again, what the fuck?! Those are my guys. And, it should be noted that they sat in the same row on the plane. That is some seriously great eavesdropping for a fellow passenger to enjoy.

Needless to say, this night has already been filled with adventure and we’ve only just begun. It is a shock to the system after Moloka’i but it makes sense. It’s the start of a whole new year and this one, I believe, is gonna be real good.

It’s a good thing I made so many leis.
